Founded in Soroti, VARAM Sickle Cell Foundation is a mission-driven organization dedicated to transforming the lives of those affected by sickle cell disease in Uganda.
The Journey
Born from a need,
Driven by Compassion
VARAM was founded on the belief that geography should not determine a child's access to life-saving medical care. In the Teso sub-region, sickle cell remains a significant but often misunderstood challenge.
What started as a small support group in Soroti has grown into a comprehensive foundation providing medical aid, genetic counseling, and robust community awareness programs.
What We Do
Turning Awareness Into
Action
Fighting sickle cell disease requires more than treatment alone. Through testing, awareness, blood drives, and youth outreach, we are building a future where every Ugandan understands sickle cell before it changes a life.
Test Before You Love
Free sickle cell and blood group testing camps for youth and couples, in partnership with Uganda Blood Transfusion Services. Because UGX 5,000 for a test can save a lifetime of pain.
Paint Soroti Red
High-energy awareness events like our annual June 19 Marathon. We turn streets red with runners, music, and testing tents so the whole town talks about sickle cell disease for one unforgettable day.
Blood for Warriors
Community blood drives supporting Soroti Regional Blood Bank. Sickle cell warriors need blood during crises, and we mobilize 200+ donors per event so no child dies waiting.
School & Church Outreach
We go where young people make life-changing relationship decisions. Through SCD clubs, youth camps, and premarital counseling, we help make “What’s your genotype?” as normal as “What’s your name?”
